Chicago Sun-Times: Movement wants uniform icons for Wi-Fi bubbles
"Warchalking (www.warchalking.org) is a movement to mobilize the geek community to decide a standard iconography for public Wi-Fi. It's been likened to the old hobo chalk code, which subtly identified houses of Friendly Women With Apple Pie and Cold-Hearted Mayors With Firearms. But actually, it's more akin to what had to happen in the previous millennium in response to another emerging technology. The day came when there were so many automobiles in private hands that society needed a common iconography to manage them."
Had three separate reporters phone up refering to this story, which is the only way I found out about it. Which is depressing for many reasons, notably that the much of the media relies on only a few, second-to-third hand viewpoints, and that spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt about stuff gets column-inches.
But, on a cheerier note... Toby points us to an entire country with a clue: Estonia!
